Ever since I was a child, I loved to watch my Aunt June draw. She would sketch people on the street as they went about their day. I had no idea she was a fashion illustrator – I just knew she could draw.

I was out in Brooklyn attending a fashion show with her as she began to sketch the models and others in attendance. We began to talk about fashion, different blogs, and came up with this sort of street style idea. While you can take numerous pictures of someone in a matter of seconds, a sketch takes a bit longer – giving you time to understand one’s sense of style, as oppose to simply snapping a picture and forgetting that person’s name an hour after you upload their picture to your blog. You get a lot of inspiration riding the train and meeting people around Brooklyn. This week I met Ivy.

Ivy K. Marvel is an archivist librarian in the Brooklyn Collection at the Brookln Public Library. Originally from Spring Valley Wisconsin, Ivy’s style is a mix between a 1970’s California girl and a 1960's French teenager. High-rise jeans, big glasses, and anything else you can probably find deep in Williamsburg. “I was obsessed with Mrs. Kotter's style on the TV show ‘Welcome Back Kotter’ for a long time.” Ivy’s other style influences come from French New Wave movies and Anna Karina – thick eyeliner and simple short skirts. Ivy doesn’t always look like she’s in a Francois Truffaut movie or counting down the days until The Who play Coachella – her style varies from day to day. But nevertheless, Ivy is a vintage type of girl.
