Amanda Lew Kee started as a goth inspired jewelry line, sold locally in boutiques of Toronto, Canada. Shifting her craft of jewelry design to clothing design, Kee launched a womens ready-to-wear collection in 2010; inspired by artificial and natural aesthetics. Symmetry with clean cuts formed the base. From zipper fronts to bodycon sheer dresses, the variety showed range yet remained cohesive. Using black as a palette in her previous collections, Kee binds chic elegance with everyday comfort.

While her S/S'12 collection uses more vibrant color blends, that pristine cut remains evident as her niche. Nudes and kaleidoscopic prints structure the designs, while light fabrics maintain that spring/summer ease.

From True Blood to Deadmau5, Kee's collaborative success has us anxious as to what's next for 2012, or should we say who?

Rummaging a list of preferred reads and inspirations, there’s a post from Scott Schuman with a pleasant idea on style; based on a question asked of the Bearded Man. With the New Year, people fathom ridiculous resolutions in which they contradict in a two week time span, max. However, the concept Ouigi Theodore presented got my mind churning on the idea and excited that it may in fact be a tangible one – a suit for every occasion. It’s common to wear a suit in the corporate world or to a cocktail party hosted by the elites of the city. However, consider wearing a suit daily, for any occasion. Sure you may brush the idea off at first glance, but really think about it.

Kanye West mentioned in his song titled Last Call, a personal favorite, “you ____ wear suits 'cause you can't dress no mo’. I heard this line and thought, there’s truth in that. One can easily get comfortable in the daily routine of tying their tie and buttoning their jacket because that’s what their career entails. But take a step back. Imagine seeing someone in a suit at a baseball game and they look like that’s exactly where they belong. To truly accomplish this, it would take a deep understanding of style, balance and opposition. Not to mention, a certain level of charm for the sake of people in your presence. People aren’t perceptive to the style of someone; it’s the charm of the look that captures them. From well-tailored pants to clean cut jackets, the affair of casual suits would be an impressionable one. When I read this resolution, I thought what a breath of fresh air it could be to witness this. In an industry so stuffed with thousand dollar suits, does one for every occasion exist?

Ghubar Magazine has been acknowledged as one of the most influential French publications. Founded by 23-year-old Sarah Diouf, the magazine not only informs you of the latest trends or the season's must haves, it embraces diversity and gives a new light to the word beauty. In an interview with editor-in-chief, Sarah Diouf, we discussed influence, inspiration and personal opinion.

What was the inspiration behind the name Ghubar and how did the idea of creating

and publishing a fashion magazine form?

Just for the record, this question just made it to my top ten (laughs).

Ghubar means Dust. It's in Arabic.

At a time where fashion was going way too far on the color subject, we wanted to remind (people) that any form of art

is only here to enlighten our path, not to set human beings apart. We are just passengers and all called to

go… it's a cycle; what comes to dust, goes back to dust. You can apply this to seasons, trends and also

the magazine, who digitally disappears every month to leave place to another issue.

I have always been attracted to image and all types of visual forms of expression.

Plus, most people tend to forget but beside books, magazines are also a powerful way to teach and learn.

And lessons are definitely better memorized with beautiful images.

"Ghubar has for mission to break with this uniform image reflection of a society which is not

anymore." What uniform image reflection of a society are you referencing as a mission

statement? How has this affected the fashion industry and how does Ghubar break those

standards?

No matter how you dress - do you fit in the beauty and fashionable standards if you're a size 6, Indian and

short? Hard to figure it out.

Well, the world is colorful, so are the people who like to dress. Maybe it's time to stop discriminating and

actually go more "real".

Of course, we read all those papers because somehow they make us travel and dream.

But sometimes, it feels so good to see a real woman or just someone we can identify to.

Ghubar is trying to bring something different with new representations of people. We still want to make people

dream, but in an affordable way. We mix colors, styles, prices, everything. It's online fashion for all.

Being based in Paris, what has your experience been as an editor and working to expose

creative talent in the fashion industry?

Our location has offered us a lot of opportunities and opened a lot of doors more easily - but abroad.

Coming from Paris when I am in New York, for example, is a real plus that I won't deny, nor neglect.

Here, it's another story. But we definitely succeeded in making our place in this industry.

Ghubar is recognized as something. Big - I can't tell because I am way too deep in it. But wherever I

go, I have the chance to meet and exchange with some of the most amazing and talented people and being

confronted to someone else's creativity is for sure one of the things that I enjoy.

From personal observation, how influential is the nature of fashion on the culture of Paris?

Paris IS Fashion. I am not sure how we can split one from the other.

The city and the fashion can't live without each other, and are 100% part of the culture.

Paris is a city where everything is beautiful within the eye of a discoverer, but Parisians are terribly lazy.

The combo gives birth to what I called the "effortless chic" - which is totally Parisian, it's a way of life.

My latest crush was for Gat Rimon (www.gatrimon.com), it's a french brand which always offer great

collections and well tailored pieces talking to all fashion tribes : casual, minimal, preppy, rock, bohemian (…).

Their summer 2012 collection is all we love : silk, maxi dresses, & bright colors.

Your favorite place to shop?

During the past two years, I have been shopping online a lot (asos.com, Nastygal.com, net-a-porter.com), but

I love vintage and statement pieces. I do not have one and only favorite place to shop, but many I pick things

from wherever I go.

As Ghubar continues to grow, what can readers expect next with the magazine?

For 2012, I cannot tell you too much, but for sure, they can expect something better and a big surprise

THE LUXURY OF BRANDS

Brand: to give a product a distinct identity by means of characteristic design, packaging, etc.

Luxury brands have geared their designs to consumers whom find pleasure in the art of getting dressed. Generally they understand the label’s history and importance to fashion, as well as have an appreciation for quality. Recently, luxury brands have found safety nets in relating to the average consumers by designing lower-priced collections for mainstream stores. However, just how consumer friendly are they?

We’re expected to be excited for the much repetitive title “luxury brand for mainstream store” and believe in the exclusivity pitched by numbering the amount of pieces available for a period of time. While we’re made to believe it is for the greater good of the average consumer, it’s really to aid the pockets of the “politically correct” designer labels. The fact of the matter is, the everyday consumer will not spend $250-$300 on a single piece of clothing because it’s a high-priced label. The designs are not exclusive if they’re being produced for the mass market and available in 250 stores. The labels are not for you to buy as they are intended to make you believe you can afford them – marketing 101.

This isn’t a protest against all designer brand relations to the average society nor am I saying if your favorite label decides to go public, you should not support it. I’d like you to be a well-informed consumer and succumb purchasing clothing because it’s your personal preference. Luxury brands need a platform to relate and for now, that’s the mainstream market. What will be the game changer?

At the end of the day unless you have Old Navy prices, you are not consumer friendly.

In a world of his own, Palillo has a penchant for the monstrous and the symbolic. Staying inside his signature aesthetic – where enormous proportions meet three-dimensional structures and morbid graphics – the new designs take the trademark patchworks and cutouts on another level, stretching in both shape and size. Fashion illustrators are some of the most intriguing artists, as they manipulate and configure the art of fashion design. Viewing models paving the runway or lookbooks from the most recent collections, they interpret what they see in to a 2-dimensional form. We had the opportunity to interview various fashion illustrators of mixed mediums in a mini-series feature collection, Illustrated.

Jessica Rae Sommer: Fashion illustration, portrait artist, avant garde painter | Los Angeles, CA

C.P: Favorite designer(s) to draw inspiration for sketching and why?

J.S: I am inspired by all sorts of design and fashion! I love your standard classics, Dior, Channel, Gareth Pugh- always has breathtaking lines and iconic shapes. But I also love looking at street fashion, cultural costumes and fashion from other countries. I tend to fall for anything overly embellished, strong and textural with subtle undertone of feminine mystique.

C.P: What medium do you add to your fashion illustrations? (watercolor, collages, paint, etc.) What makes your illustrations particular to you? J.S: I use a mix of several mediums, predominately acrylic mixed with water at times, as well as ink, marker and metallic. I love finishing off my pieces with metallic and a few heavy accentuating lines to add drama and draw attention to certain features. I sometimes wonder if I will push a piece too far, but it's hard not to get caught up in the moment when I am working on a painting. It's like nothing else exists. I also tend to gravitate towards facial expressions, or the purposeful absence of them to help convey the emotion of the fashion or portrait.

C.P: Fashion nudes, why or why not?(When there's nudity in fashion, do you consider it provocative or still fashion? Would you illustrate fashion nudes?)J.S: The human form is beautiful, wonderfully created and artfully crafted. I understand the allure of a hint of skin in fashion. I love to see an unexpected long back through a sheer dress, a low v in the cut of a blouse, it adds to the mystique- but for me, I prefer that- the HINT of mystique. Once too much is shown I think the mystery can be lost. Fashion at its best for me lies in the subtleties, the edges, the boundaries, the daring and enticing edge - without crossing over. I do believe that for some people, drawing nudes helps train the eye to see the real shape of the body instead of drawing what the mind thinks it sees; a leg, an arm, a nose - instead showing shapes and forms and shadows as they truly exist.

C.P: If given the opportunity, what design house would you sketch for and why?J.S: Ah, Chanel? I love Chanel. Something about Chanel just says lady, class, allure... But honestly, I'm like a girl in an ice cream shoppe ( and I happen to really love ice cream! ). Just like with desert, the thought of choosing just one makes me feel a bit frenzied. I love fashion. I love a blend of it, any and all flavors and types. I feel there is something to be appreciated and enjoyed.

C.P: Do you consider illustrating as just a hobby? Where would you like to take your illustrations?

J.S: I am a blend of artistic occupations. I currently work as an interior designer at HBA, Hirsch Bedner Associates - a hotel and hospitality interior design firm with a rich history and projects all over the world. I also have my art featured in galleries and homes in the Los Angeles Area, (my art was recently featured at a 'fashion week', at Very Venice Art and Design (Abbot Kinney, LA) and have enjoyed working on quite a few commission portraits and pieces here as well. It has been a whirlwind since moving to Los Angeles a year ago, when my work really picked up. I thrive on design, art, and fashion. I would love to continue to build my fashion illustration portfolio into a lasting career. The connections that I have made with people through my art and illustrating have been life changing. It is such a gift to be able to share illustration and art with others.

Jessica Durrant: Freelance Illustrator | Atlanta, Georgia

C.P: Favorite designer(s) to draw inspiration for sketching and why?

J.D: I am drawn to Alexandar McQueen when I want to create something voluminous, dramatic and a bit avant garde. But I also love Chanel, YSL, Valentino, Lanvin and Dior. I am a lover of fashion design. I just really appreciate so many different types of designers. I find fashion design to be an art form. Pure and simple. Some of my illustrations are my own designs. Although I have no intention of becoming a clothing designer. I just want to paint and draw a woman in a fabulous dress or outfit.

C.P: What medium do you add to your fashion illustrations? (watercolor, collages, paint, etc.) What makes your illustrations particular to you?

J.D: The bulk of my work is done in watercolor and pen. I find that most of my artwork is more about what I leave out, rather then what I put in the composition. I love an unfinished line, dripping and splattering of paint, and a clean white background. I always start each piece by first drawing the eyes. I love a strong eye with full lashes. There's something very striking and appealing about a woman's eyes that can draw the viewer in.

C.P: Fashion nudes, why or why not?

J.D: I learned so much when I was in college from my years of drawing nudes. It is imperative to become a better artist to study and draw from the nude. I currently haven't created any nudes lately, and it's mainly because I'm so absorbed in illustrating fashion and portraits. I think it can be provocative and it can be tasteful and beautiful. It depends on the piece and the artist's intent. Some people will always think nudes in art is provocative. Which is a shame because if you go to any great museum in this world you will see nudes. The human form is certainly one of the world's most beautiful creations. Artists everywhere know that if you can master painting the human form, you've achieved a technical hurdle that leads you to being able to paint anything you want.

C.P: If given the opportunity, what design house would you sketch for and why?

J.D: What a fun question! Maybe Dior. I think that aesthetic of a cinched in waist, red lips and a cat eye-very 1950's, is such a great look that I would love to paint. They used to have the great Rene Gurau illustrate for their advertisements in the 40's and 50's. I wish more designers would employ fashion illustrators to do advertising work like they did in the first half of the 20th century.

C.P: Do you consider illustrating as just a hobby? Where would you like to take your illustrations?

J.D: Art has always been in my life. It was always a dream to sell my own creations someday. Through commissions, freelance jobs and my online sales, I have been able to now make a living as an illustrator. I would love to continue doing what I am doing now. Creating what I love and connecting with people from all around the world thru my work.

Pirate Romance, founded by designer Joi French, has grown in to one of the most sought after accessories line. Filling the void for wearable art at accessible prices, the aesthetics are homage to the "Punk Femme" element of design. Mixing polar opposite mediums with pop culture, music, art and architecture, the rugged and bold pieces are an interesting blend of modern feminism.
The autumn/winter collection was inspired by 70's glam/glitter rock culture, with references such as David Bowie and New York's street punk subculture. In viewing the collection, we noticed geometric shapes formed the structure, brewing architectural features with that hint of 'rock'. Earrings molding shapes and texture, necklaces piled with metal chains and bracelets accented with coned spikes also held a tribal aspect to their designs.

In an exclusive interview, we get details on the new studio space, the new BITCHY team member and the collection for Urban Outfitters.

COCAINE -What is BitchingandJunkfood? Would you consider it a lifestyle?

B&J - Yeah, bitching and junkfood is a lifestyle, although we're reigning in the junkfood. What we've created is all about fun, bitching in a healthy way, letting off steam. The fashion industry is so serious and we just wanted to have a laugh. You work so hard and we have a motto "if it's not fun it's not worth doing."

COCAINE -How did the idea of BitchingandJunkfood form and what was the experience like developing the idea?

B&J - I always knew I wanted to have my own business and we launched the store as [a] small online vintage venture. I have a background in design and having my own label was all part of the plan, but I didn't realize how quickly it would happen. I had reached a point in my career where I was bored designing for other people and I felt like I was constantly trying to fit into someone elses aesthetic. I'm a stubborn bitch so this was destroying my soul, as was my comfortable lifestyle. I packed everything up, moved out of my flat and moved into a big warehouse in a warehouse district in London. I just opened my mind to new things, new people and was massively inspired to start making things happen. It's been a huge personal sacrifice and I pretty much holed myself away for a year and did nothing but work. Nobody really prepares you for how tough it's going to be, but it was completely worth it.

The website rapidly developed into two labels and mutliple collaborations. Since making that initial decision, its grown really organically and we've just rolled with it. We were approached by various people to get involved in different things and we always struggled to say no. It's been a huge amount of hard work to get it to where it is after a year and a half and it's going to be an even bigger effort to get it to where we want to go, but we love every minute of it.

COCAINE -What are some of your in-house brands and how do you go about selecting them?

B&J - We stock Cheap Monday, Daniel Palillo(new for SS), Neurotica, KTZ, Long Clothing, Emma Ware, Oops...the list goes on. We select brands that we would want in our own wardrobe. We try to steer clear of the "selecting what the customer wants" cliche. This is our shop, it's our taste and it's about sharing what we like with people who get what we're doing. We don't want to please all of the people all of the time, but the people we do please are passionate about what we do. It's not about mass market for us, it's about a little "cool stuff" niche.

COCAINE -You've collaborated with Urban Outfitters to design pieces specifically for them. How did this collaboration develop? Can we expect more collaborative efforts this year?

B&J - This really is a match made in heaven. The Urban team is cool and really encouraging. They're making it very easy for us to develop. We always said we don't work with people we don't like just to make money - we love all the crew there so it's a really nice experience for us. We intially collaborated with them on a jewellery collection of headdresses and it was a massive success. The jewellery buyer introduced us to the Renewal buyer and we started working on some more pieces for them, which sold out in a couple of weeks. They're now rolling us out to all their European stores and we're launching a menswear range with them. They give us freedom to really push it and aren't afraid to take chances, which really works for us as a business.

COCAINE -Does BitchingandJunkfood design with fashion or style? Is there a mix of the two?

B&J - We're more about style really. Obviously we keep an eye on the key trends. We have two labels, Remade and TWO WEEKS, and I have to say that they're really more about style. We design for girls who just have the X - they're not constantly chasing catwalk trends, they're just effortlessly cool. With Remade it's all about the shorts and the trimmings have a nod to fashion trends but there will always be studs - they're just a basic at this point. With TWO WEEKS it's about style. It's a gradual progression through seasons, it's anti fast fashion. The whole industry is so fast paced, this is much more laid back, less frenetic, not constantly re-inventing.

COCAINE -There should be a significant moment in fashion/style within a decade. Did we have that significant moment this past decade?

B&J - For me it was Vivienne Westwood collecting her OBE in 1992 with no knickers on. Everyone is so PC these days. She's bonkers, she doesn't give a shit and that's brilliant - she proves that you don't have to do anything by the book to be a success and that in itself is a massive inspiration for us.

COCAINE -Who would you list as "designers to watch for"?

B&J - Personal faves are Meadham Kerchoff, David Koma, Belle Sauvage, KTZ and Horace we love Australian labels Ksubi, Sass and Bide and Elliot Ward Fear. I also liked what I saw from Norma Kamali this season and we've always got an eye on Alexander Wang. Givenchy is my all time favorite.

COCAINE -Being based in London, what is the fashion culture like there? Are there similarities to the states?

B&J- We have an eye on stateside street culture through blogs. To a certain extent, there are similarities. London is so eclectic. Depending on the area you visit you will find completely different looks. Youth culture has historically been very strong and massively influential here and London has really been a hub for that.

COCAINE -What advice would you give people looking to launch their own platform in fashion?

B&J - Think, think think and it will come to you. Don't try to force it. Get advice from your family and friends, having them behind you and believing in you is the single most important thing. Read, research and think again. It's just as important to know the business of fashion as the design side and there really is nothing you can't learn from a book and asking advice from others. Don't be afraid to ask people questions - don't ask, don't get. Also, never assume that just cause someone has worked in the industry longer than you that they are right. Trust your instinct. It's seldom wrong.

If you are thinking of starting a label, a market is always a good place to start off. If you chose the right market, you'll get picked up by press and potential buyers.

Fashion is all about the evolution of style. Historic timestamps influence the present and future while maintaining the modern factor. In understanding the brand "Young Dumb&High Strung," it was no surprise they acknowledged their development far beyond being a t-shirt brand.

You hear a name like that, and you wonder what inspired such. When asked the meaning and symbolization, designer Christian Maiko stated "It's my view of our generation today. Not in an offensive way, just making an observation. It's something everyone can relate to, living the fast life, and not having a care in the world. It symbolizes, I would say, the blunt statement of everything is black and white. There's no grey area."

Discussing the impact of street culture, and how brands are heavily influenced by the rapid surge of street styles, YD&HS took a different stance on street relevance in their design wave. "I wouldn't say it's influenced by "street" culture. That would make it sound "urban". It's more influenced by a high fashion wanna be DIY culture. You know, the kids who make their own knock off Chanel print shirts and studded converses, because those are the people I come from," says Maiko. "I do have street art in my background. That's where I first learned how to make stencils, which is where I got the idea to hand stencil shirts."

Who is Nikita Gale? In searching for a definite answer, I discovered the story isn't so black and white. Political activist, dream catcher, soul capturer with a camera lens, or an ordinary individual? So eager to label the creator with such bold statements, I figured if I was to come up with some sort of conclusion, it should be fact based. In an interview discussing personal expression in photography, inspiration, opinions, and being an artist here in Atlanta, Nikita Gale gives enough for you to inquire beyond this interview.

Q&A:

-Who is Nikita Gale?

Nikita Gale is a conceptual artist and photographer.

-In viewing your work, expression oozes from each and every photo. Is this expression of how you, the photographer, want your subjects captured and received, or expression of your subjects, and their perception of themselves?

Well, like many solo artists, I am a control freak, so my photos are always a representation of how I see my subjects. However, on some shoots, you will have an element of collaboration where you want the subject to be happy with the finished product as well. This can be tricky because I often feel like some of my least favorite images are the ones that other people seem to really like.

-Inspiration and influence for pursuing this medium.

William Eggleston, Peter Beard, Guy Bourdin, Juergen Teller, Bob Richardson, Terry Richardson, Ellen von Unwerth

-Original Polaroids vs. Digital Cameras. One over the other or mix medium.

I don't like how the whole hipster culture has taken over Polaroids, so I'll say medium format or 35mm film over digital. Don't get me wrong, I like digital, too, but mixed media is the best. I love text-based work (John Baldessari, Barbara Kruger) and photo-based collages (David Hockney, Richard Hamilton, Peter Beard).

-While Atlanta is developing culturally, it holds its limits for creative nay-sayers. Do you feel this hinders your growth as an artist?

I think Atlanta is an incredible place to develop independently as an artist. It's a great launching pad. Everyone wants to collaborate and help you out; I have never encountered any sort of competitive or negative energy here. Also, Atlanta is cheap, so I can actually afford to create work! Lots of work.

You create art work with messages, some abstract some concrete. As an artist, who is Nikita and what's the main objective in your art work.

The objective of my work is always to find a way to express how my mind processes the world around me. I want to ask questions, provide answers or make statements with my work.

-Do you have a muse? If so, who's your muse?

I don't really have a muse. I guess you could say that I'm inspired by the ordinary.

-What can we expect from Nikita come 2011?

Oh I like to show and then tell ;)

Q&A:

By definition of you, the photographer, what is photography?

It’s my access to hot girls.
Inspiration and influence for pursuing this medium.

I’m very inspired by food and sex. And women, I’m inspired by them too! Men don’t really inspire me. I love how you can transform a woman in to so many different characters. I find women are easier to mold in to a certain character through fashion, accessories, wigs and makeup. With men, you just get what you’re given.
When viewing the work of a photographer, a story should be told, a message should be conveyed, or/and an emotion should be evoked. Do you capture images with this underlined goal, or is there a greater purpose behind your work?

I like my photos to have a purpose. I don’t just take photos of pretty girls against pretty backdrops because what’s the point? I always try to tell a story. As a human being in this plastic life I have so many views and opinions, don’t we all?

Why did you choose to focus on fashion versus any other "subject"?

I’m obsessed with models and beautiful women and I love fashion. Why would I ever want to photograph landscapes when I can photograph beautiful women?

Who's Frank the Photographer's muse? You're free to have more then one.(lol)

I haven’t met my muse yet but I’d like that model Eniko Mihalik to be my muse, I think I could do some amazing work with her. There’s something really cheeky about her, I like cheeky girls. Eniko, if you’re reading this, holla!

What was one of your most successful moments and what do you look to achieve now?

I’m never satisfied with where I’m at, I never will be. Even when I achieve what I want, I’m like ‘Oh, I’ve done that now, how can I do better?!’ I want to become the best fashion photographer I can be, if I just sit back and pat myself on the back, that will never happen.

Personal Opinion;Mario Sorrenti vs. Terry Richardson: Both are fairly ballsy in their approach. Would you categorize one over the other?

Oh I’m a Terry fan. I’ve been a fan of Terry Richardson before he did fashion photography. It was so obvious to me straight away that what he was doing wasn’t porn, he’s photos are so clever and brave. Sorrenti is absolutely amazing but he’s not effortless, Terry is.

Describe She Is Frank in three words.

Really, really sexy.

Oh definitely editorials. I’m more drawn to fiction that reality.

embrace such an unique take from the emerging designer? Harlem discusses the

-In designing the JJH Jack Shark Polo, where did the inspiration come from and were there influential resources that helped mold this concept?

I designed a men's blazer in the fall 2008 to personify the kind of artist I had become. The JACK Shark Polo Knits are based on that design. As my business improved with J.HAR, my personal life became chaotic, but I was focused on triumph. The JACK Shark Polo Knit personifies this artistic drive & triumph.

-There's a strong presence of symbolism in this design. Is there an etched out meaning or could the interpretation be given by the consumer?

The symbolism is the personification of artistic drive & triumph.

-You recently released the silent film for the polo release. Talk about the idea, influence, and message relayed with the film.

I was insulted by a number of entities and brands whose companies are "icons" within the industry. I was told everything from "no one is gonna buy that shit" to "you'll never be a Lacoste, Gucci or any luxury brand."

Then I got a call from a major artist wanting to preview and purchase my entire upcoming collection, which still hasn't debuted here in the states. The film illustrates what he said my brand would do once it hit mainstream.

-Who are you designing for?

Men and women who understand the creative facet of luxury and challenge the status quo.

-Are there any projects or collaborations currently in the works?

I'm preparing the debut of JACK by Jackson Harlem's full collection. Artists have purchased over half the collection since they have to plan their wardrobe for events and videos far in advance. I am humbled by the faith artists have shown in my work.

-Any advice for aspiring designers or designers in the mix of their own projects whom may be a bit uncertain about their craft?

Protect your art and your business, be sure this is the career you want to pursue, and if/when things get tough, keep swimming.

Although vintage is broadly accepted, how do you go about selecting items for the store? Do they reflect more personal taste versus possible consumers or a mixture of both?

We select our clothing from old movie sets, estate sales, and we travel all over to select some of the dopes pieces ever! We buy based on our own personal style but mainly our consumers. We pick pieces that are similar from the latest runway shows. We love high fashion influence

-PLRG extends beyond being a store. You host events for specific causes, fashion shows, and trunk shows. Would you consider it a lifestyle? Do you look to extend PLRG further?

I'm not sure if I owe my love for nudity in fashion photography to Terry Richardson,

but I'm pretty sure he holds a great percentage in influence. To capture shots

in such a raw and real perspective gives a greater reality than just a photo.

It's a pure liberal yet controversial experience simultaneously. Shouldn't all

mediums deliver this gift?

He recently released behind the scenes footage of the

shoot for the 2010 Pirelli calendar, featuring commentary and personal thoughts from

the models. Here's the video:

PROENZA SCHOULER: CONTROVERSIAL MEANS

Proenza Schouler presented a short film that went beyond the depth-less

concepts we're sometimes given, and gave us something worth taking note of. In

"act da fool" there are five young models accompanied by dialect that can easily be

categorized or stereotyped. In viewing this video, I took the elements presented

as symbolism of hope. I can take hope a step further, and say faith. In a world so

condemn by all negative aspects of life, the girls rest their faith in the stars and

within each other, refusing to be condemn by the world around them.

Aware of the controversial lines, designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough did an interview discussing the concept behind the film.

Certain responses stood on grounds of unworthy means. For example, "The Fashion Bomb" highlighted the fact that none of the production teamwere African American and therefore felt their hand in this "portrayal" was somewhat biased and irrelevant. However, Harmony, the producerof the film, made a clear point in stating his inspiration was from when he “used to hang out with this gang of black girls that were really hardcore delinquents, and I always loved them.” He continued, “Sometimes we would walk home from school and I would just watch them like set stuff on fire. Some of them would sleep in tree-houses and things. I used to always just think they were so terrific. In some way I just kinda tapped into that story.”
Fashion blogger, Erica, also had a strong opinion regarding the video.People love to take stride in this industry from a "mainstream" perspective,but the moment you open the box for abstract interpretation, it's consideredoffensive. When you create something that can be taken into numerous directions,you've really created something beautiful. I can't decipher what your meaningshould be or what you should think after viewing it, but please leave your opinionsafter doing so.
The "mainstream" intellect wasn't built for this.

What immediately drew me to these jewelry designs, was the fossil resemblance.

Constructed by solid .950 sterling silver or .750 gold, designer Fernando Akasaka takes

an interesting approach to the art of creating.

Of Japanese descendant and based in Sao Paul, Brazil, Akasaka graduated with

a degree in engineering and business. In March 2006 he launched a furniture and

decor objects company called F.AKASAKA and in October 2009, he launched his jewelry company, Le Blob.

Since I'm a sucker for sheer nudity, you can assume which piece is a personal favorite.

When I posted the first installment, I mentioned the change in direction for the

brand and how the translation came about in the designs. In an email recently received from

Brittany at Hellz, she goes into detail regarding the second installment and the new direction.

"This Fall, HELLZ is excited to introduce this seasons 2nd installment -
'Bad Girls Never Die'. The small capsule collection is a direct reflection
of the media's most influential women shrouded in controversy and deemed
'bad girls' by the public. 70's rock n' roll inspired pieces like the 'Knew

I seek thrills and chills. Fall season has everyone frantic, claiming their season

must haves. Trend seekers clutch the coat tails of style leaders, trying to play catch up.

Let me be the first to announce, I'm no label luster. I don't frivolously toss dead presidents

for brands, nor do I desire to do such. However, I do have an eye for delectable

shit before I'm aware of it's importance.

I remember my mom asking if I would like this coat years ago. Handed down to

her in high school from my grandmother, I held on to it for sentimental value. At the time,

it failed to cross my mind that this coat would warm me in the years to come.

In a continuation of the vintage series, Total Recall Vintage state their influences and their vintage perspective. I really love their reference points and recognized the reflection in the pieces from their online store.

C.P:What's your definition of vintage?Christine: For me, it’s not really about how old something is. I think it’s more about how much a single piece reflects the era that it’s from. That’s why I like to feature a lot of 90s items -- they may not be that old, but the style is something that’s pretty unique to that time. American Apparel can try all they want, but there’s nothing like the real thing.

Patrick: In our case, that era looks like the clothes found in the girlfriend of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s closet in an 80’s tech-noir movie.

C.P.:What inspired Total Recall Vintage and who are the team members?

Christine: Well, I started off selling vintage stuff on Etsy and I was having trouble selling some of the pieces that I thought were really cool. It took me awhile to realize that I was in the wrong place. I’m not really into anything pre-1976, which is what Etsy is mostly about. I didn’t really fit in with the rockabilly/crafter world, so I decided to go at it on my own.

The name comes from a mutual love of Arnold Schwarzenegger movies that Patrick and I share. Of all the Arnold-related names we could come up with, this was the best fit for a vintage shop. As for the team, it’s mostly Patrick and I. We also have some very generous friends who help us out with some of the photography and modeling in exchange for pizza and booze.

Patrick: I don’t do much. I set up work lights we bought at Home Depot and snap pictures on a point-and-shoot camera. I also develop our delusions of grandeur by running around the house, screaming at the top of my lungs about how we’re going to “make it big.”

C.P: Although vintage is broadly accepted, how do you about selecting items for your store? Do they reflect more personal taste versus possible consumers or a mixture of both?

Christine: I mostly pick things that I would want to wear. Every once in awhile I try to put something up that I don’t really like, but I usually end up taking it down after looking at it for a few days. I get kinda crazy about it sometimes.

C.P.: Personal style icon(s)?

Christine: I’m really into leather and studs, so probably Lord Humongous from The Road Warrior. I also like Courtney Love.

Patrick: I second the Lord Humongous, but I just don’t have the build to pull it off. I feel the same way about early skinhead fashion (the non-racist variety influenced by the rude boys of Jamaica) – I just don’t have the arm girth for it.

James Woods in Videodrome strikes way too close to home for me. He’s got this faded tan leather jacket and he pairs it up with a clean button-up and some slick slacks, and he looks exactly like me rolling into the office in December.

If I’d have to pick my most recent influences, I’d have to go with early 90’s Andre Agassi, especially his appearance at the French Open in 1990; if you ask me, all the bike punks on their fixies ought to write that man a fat check because this guy is their fountainhead.

And, you know, I always wanted to be John Leguizamo’s character in Summer of Sam – see-thru tank tops, gold figaro chains, and pinky rings – but I’ve never been able to completely break out of who I really am: a short kid in pinstripe pants and black-rimmed glasses, the prototypical 1950’s man in a light pink polo. I am Woody Allen. I am Toby McGuire. I am your grandfather’s Old Spice in the bathroom of his house with aluminum siding.

C.P.: Season must have for female? male?

Christine: Personally, I’m stocking up on blazers and faux fur. Living in Miami, I can only really do the faux fur for like 2 or 3 weeks out of the year, but I’ll wear it everyday. And everybody needs a mean looking pair of boots in their closet. The dirtier, the better.

Patrick: Pubic hair -- for both parties involved, thank you.

C.P.: Favorite piece from Total Recall?

Christine: The saved by the beach swimsuit, for sure. Everything about it is so hopelessly early 90s -- the colors, the high-cut legs, the pattern. Love it

Patrick: I like the “Ms. Fancy Pants Sweater” because I like the name, but it also reminds me of the Marilyn Monroe sweater that Toby McGuire stole in Wonder Boys
